How NPS is Calculated

Net Promoter Score (NPS) is calculated using a simple formula based on customer responses to the question: "How likely are you to recommend us to a friend or colleague?" on a scale of 0-10.

The NPS Formula

NPS = % Promoters - % Detractors

  • 😊Promoters (9-10): Loyal customers who will recommend you
  • 😐Passives (7-8): Satisfied but not enthusiastic customers
  • 😞Detractors (0-6): Unhappy customers who may damage your brand

Note: Passives are not included in the NPS calculation, but they count toward the total number of respondents.

Example Calculation

If you surveyed 100 customers and received:

  • 60 Promoters (scores 9-10)
  • 20 Passives (scores 7-8)
  • 20 Detractors (scores 0-6)

Your NPS would be:

% Promoters = 60/100 = 60%
% Detractors = 20/100 = 20%
NPS = 60% - 20% = 40

Why NPS Matters

Net Promoter Score is one of the most widely used metrics for measuring customer loyalty and satisfaction. It's simple, standardized, and proven to correlate with business growth. Companies with high NPS scores typically see higher customer retention, more referrals, and stronger revenue growth.
